Waterville is an ongoing collaborative project with Seattle’s Office of Arts and Culture and Seattle Public Utilities. The project adds playful artistic interventions to bioretention facilities located in neighborhoods throughout Seattle. As the city creates new bioretention infrastructures, a variety of pre-designed artistic elements can be chosen to incorporate into each project, adding unique narratives to the sites while calling attention to our ever-important relationship to water.

Reflecting the tree-lined surroundings of the area, Forest encases a mirror-paneled chimney in halved wooden posts to create an immersive illusion within Piper Apartments’ art walk corridor. The installation places the viewer within an imagined forest, offering the perfect photo op while inspiring reflection on the natural world and our place within it.

Commissioned by the city of Lynnwood and tucked away under the beautiful forest canopy of Lynndale Park, this panel-based mural depicts shelf mushrooms growing on a cluster of the park’s service buildings, while also telling a playful story of friendship as two snails find one another.

Commissioned by NineDot Arts in conjunction with the Chapter Buildings, this dimensional and geometric mural creates a ball pit-like warehouse space filled with geometric blocks, adding color, depth and intrigue to the site. Two blocks from the space can also be found stacked near the lobby entrance, further tying the narrative to the site as a whole.

This cluster of pinecones, created with 196 painted skateboard decks, is inspired by the cones of the Colorado Blue Spruce and their dramatic color shift as they mature. This transition speaks to the year-round adventure that can be found near Denver, whether within the unique and vibrant city itself or the beautiful and expansive wilderness surrounding it.

Turning the fence into a threshold of sorts, this giant frog frog climbs up from his marshy home to join the joggers and cyclists on the Cross Kirkland Corridor. The integrated piece adds a playful narrative to the site, while bringing to light the division between the natural and man made.

Funded by Visit McMinnville, this dimensional mural is inspired by the local wine industry and the seeming magic of the region. The piece playfully depicts a group of orange sulfur butterflies making off with a bundle of grapes. The dimensionality of the piece is heightened by the addition of a single aluminum panel extending beyond the building’s roofline.

Created for the Washington Arts Commission, in partnership with South Seattle College, this colorful collection of reconditioned oil drums mimics industrial stacks of barrels while creating a pixilated image of a native raspberry flower. Created in conjunction with the new Patricia Reser Center for the Arts, this group of giant Fender’s blue butterflies is entering the Central Parking Garage from nearby Beaverton Creek, creating a stark contrast between the natural and manmade.

Fender’s blue butterfly is an endangered species endemic to the Willamette Valley. As pollinators, they symbolize the spread of art and the preservation of cultures, while their scarcity speaks to the importance and urgency of both.
